Greater Copenhagen has roughly 290 kollegier (student dorms) with more than 35,000 student rooms in total, spread across neighborhoods like Nørrebro, Frederiksberg, Østerbro, Amager, and the suburbs. KKIK alone administers around 6,460 student and youth housing units; the CIU/s.dk portal covers around 12,000 across the metro area; and dozens of independent kollegier add hundreds more rooms each.

When students travel, study abroad, or take internships, they can legally sublet their room through a process called fremleje. Under the Danish Rent Act (Lejeloven §§ 157–158), room sublets allow a proportional share of the tenant's rent (§ 157), while full-dwelling temporary sublets are capped at the tenant's own rent for up to two years (§ 158).

Most kollegier require written approval from the dorm administration before subletting begins. The subleaser and subtenant must sign a written contract, and both parties should document the room's condition before and after the sublet period.
